Home Heating Case Studies: Heat pump install in East Bridgewater

Tuesday, January 29th, 2019 by Jonathan Neves

Challenge

This old colonial in East Bridgewater had a dirt basement with a really old furnace and ductwork that was extremely leaky. The homeowner was spending a lot of money on oil bills trying to heat the home in the wintertime. He was also using several window AC units in the summertime. Jonathan Neves, our Project Manager at Green Energy Mechanical, decided that there were a few different approaches to rectifying the energy efficiency and comfort concerns. We could seal up all the leaks in the ductwork and wrap all of the ductwork with R8 insulation to provide a good thermal barrier. We could also replace the oil furnace with a gas system and install and energy efficient AC system. However, the approach we finally decided on was very different and a very good one at that!

Solution

The homeowner received all of the options and ultimately decided to go with a less conventional approach.  He decided to keep the existing system as a backup heat source and had us install a series of outdoor air source heat pumps connected to indoor ductless split heads. These systems are super quiet, even more quiet than his oil system with forced hot air. This also allowed him to determine where he wants the heat and AC. If the homeowner is not using a room, then he can simply turn the indoor head down or off altogether. They also provide exceptional heating capabilities, heating down to -15F outside and providing air conditioning to 115F in the summertime. Best of all, our client was eligible for Mass Save and Mass CEC rebates and was even able to finance all of it on the Mass Save HEAT Loan with 0 down, 0% financing for 84 months! Our client specified how he really enjoyed that both Melissa and Jen in the office handled all of his rebate paperwork for him! Needless to say, our client has become a raving fan and couldn’t be happier with our custom solution to his energy efficiency and comfort concerns.
